A Gothic Tale: White is for Witching

Trailers for books? Brilliant! I hope this becomes a trend.

The very talented illustrator Jon Klassen crafted the look for this teaser to Helen Oyeyemi’s new novel White is for Witching. Beautiful stuff.

Etsy Wednesday: (Ankle) Corsets & Collars

{Handmade ankle corsets by Toutus Mel }

I’ve had an affinity for spats for a couple of year now, but yet to own any. Since at least half of the year here in Portland is a little soggy, I wear a lot of boots. Spats seem like a good alternative to keep my ankles warm and allow me to wear some of the heels I’ve been collecting over the years. And let’s face it, spats rock!

These hand tatted ankle spats (corsets) won’t exactly keep the wind and the rain out, but they’re gorgeous all the same. Based on vintage patterns and original designs, they add a delicate twist to a (near) forgotten tradition. And if ankle embellishments aren’t your thing, Totus Mel designs a range of other tatted accessories, including bracelets, corsages, masks and collars.

Bright idea: Instead of making your bridesmaids wear matching dresses, why not have them choose similar color tones and tie the look together with matching tatted accessories.

A Sci-Fi Wedding (- Lucas and Roddenberry)?

Now thats what we call a wedding party.

To boldly go where no polyester has gone before.

We’ve all seen images of Vader putting a ring on Slave Leia‘s hand or a bespectacled Spock tying the knot with a Bajoran officer. But has any intrepid fan ever had a sci-fi wedding outside of the Star Wars and Star Trek universes?

You see, as any fan of Herbert, Sturgeon, Heinlein, Vonnegut or countless similar authors will tell you, science fiction had existed long before these two powerhouse franchises. Authors and filmmakers created rich worlds that captured imaginations long before (and after) Luke was doing handstands in the swamp.

So has anyone worked these themes into their wedding? Has anyone married in Known Space? Or had a reception at The Gentlemen Loser? Has any brave John Carter ever married A Princess of Mars? Let us know your story (and share some photos!)

Space Fashion: Zero Gravity Dresses

{Top: Finalists from the 2007 Hyper Space Couture Design Contest | Bottom: Collections of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum | Eri Matsui's Zero Gravity dress}

In 2006 there were rumblings about “the future” and weddings in space. We even caught a first glimpse of the Zero Gravity dress by Japanese designer Eri Matsui. Three years later, we’re still waiting. But for you suborbital-dreamers who don’t have an extra $2.2 million sitting around or the patience to wait for Rocketplane XP to finaly take flight, there’s still hope.

Space enthusiasts Erin and Noah have taken matters into their own hands. The couple plan to exchange their vows on the G-Force One, a modified Boeing 727 that takes its passengers to weightless heights. It’s not exactly space, but it does warrant the awesome Zero Gravity dress that Erin had made in Japan. You can follow their wedding planning journey here: zerogravitywedding.com

Even if you’re planning your wedding on Earth, there’s no reason your dress can’t be out of this world. Check out some of the recent designs from Space Couture 2009:
